Geometric optimization of dielectric elastomer electrodes for dynamic applications

Dielectric elastomers are soft actuators, made of an elastomer membrane sandwiched by compliant electrodes. Because their high energy density and quick response, they well suited for dynamic applications such as loudspeakers. Thanks to progress in the manufacturing process dielectric electrode shape can be patterned very diverse shapes. In this study, we focus on relation between dynamical acoustical behavior a loudspeaker. By using finite element model loudspeaker, optimization algorithm is set up compute optimal shapes according chosen objectives, maximizing or minimizing contribution eigenmode radiated sound. The designs then tested experimentally, efficiency procedure assessed. It shown that frequency response loudspeakers tuned optimizing electrodes, simulations suggest directivity also controlled. Finally, perspectives proposed method briefly discussed.
